Verdun

Above, Verdun left (where I watched the All Black game) and right the Monument to the Children of Verdun, 5 soldiers, one from each of the 5 different armies forming a single wall with their chests.
Below, the Tour Chaussee, part of a a massive wall protecting the city, and right, the Victory Monument.

Verdun is in the Meuse region of France, which suffered hugely in the Great War battle 1914-18. The Battle lasted 300 dyas, killing 378 777 French soldiers and 330 000 German soldiers. The German had an advancing line of 20km !!!!!
Riding through the Argonne district was very sombering, cimitierre with masses of crosses, one after another.
